An Evening with Colson Whitehead
Nov 19, 2026
Starting: 8:00 PM
Harlem’s criminal underworld and New York’s 1980s transformation converge in the final installment of Colson Whitehead’s Harlem Trilogy. The novelist presents Cool Machine on Thursday, November 19 as part of Miami Book Fair’s Evenings With series at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus auditorium in Downtown Miami.
Following Harlem Shuffle and Crook Manifesto, the novel returns to furniture dealer and fence Ray Carney, whose plans for one last heist threaten the security he has built for his family. His associate Pepper takes a bodyguard job that draws him into the East Village’s art and club scenes. Their intersecting stories examine ambition, loyalty and survival against a backdrop of real estate speculation and widening inequality.
Raised in Manhattan, Whitehead began his career reviewing books, music and television for The Village Voice. He won Pulitzer Prizes for The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys, with the former also receiving the National Book Award.
Tickets are $35 and include admission for one person and a copy of Cool Machine. One $10 companion ticket, without a book, may be purchased per book-bundled ticket. Each admission ticket also includes a complimentary pass to the weekend Street Fair.
