Photographs of Florida’s natural environment become sails suspended above the reflecting pool at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami. On view October 14, 2026 through January 17, 2027, Josh Aronson’s A Sudden Leap brings photography into an outdoor sculptural installation as part of MOCA’s Art on the Plaza series.
Two sail masts rise from the water, supporting photographic images that connect the museum’s plaza with the surrounding region’s landscapes. Aronson’s first museum-commissioned public artwork creates a setting for contemplation, extending his interest in how natural spaces hold memories and shape a sense of belonging. Art on the Plaza presents temporary, site-specific installations by South Florida artists.
Born in Toronto and raised in Florida, the Miami-based artist explores identity, landscape and transformation in the American South. In 2024, he became the first artist to receive both the People’s Choice Award and Juror’s Prize in Miami Beach’s No Vacancy public art program. His photographs have appeared in publications including The New Yorker, The New York Times and Frieze.
