Beach Towel Art Show

Homemade beach towels become the exhibition surface for a participatory art gathering on the sand at 9th Street in Miami Beach. Returning Saturday, December 5 during Miami Art Week, Beach Towel Art Show invites artists and non-artists alike to create their own towel-based works and display them together in an informal outdoor exhibition.

Created by Miami-based artist Brian Butler, the project began during Miami Art Week in 2024 as an intentionally accessible alternative to the week’s traditional fairs and exhibitions. That first edition brought together 67 artists and more than 80 towels, with works ranging from printed designs to sewn, painted and mixed-media constructions. 

The concept has since traveled beyond Miami, including a 2026 edition at White Crest Beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. The Miami edition remains rooted in the same open-call spirit: participants make a towel, bring it to the beach and share it alongside work by the broader creative community.
