Binding Histories: Ode to the Grove
Jul 12, 2025 - Jul 13, 2025
From: 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM
Reflect on place, memory and community through bookmaking inspired by the cultural history of Coconut Grove. Binding Histories: Ode to the Grove takes place Saturday, July 12 and Sunday, July 13 at the Vizcaya Village Garage, and marks the final workshop in a four-weekend summer series exploring themes of identity, family and Miami.
Led by artists Nicole Combeau and Sean Sullivan, this session guides participants in creating drum leaf books that draw from archival materials and personal experiences. Whether honoring a neighborhood’s legacy or capturing your own connection to place, this workshop offers space for thoughtful storytelling through visual design. Materials are provided, and the event is free with advance registration. Attendees must confirm their participation via email the week of the event to retain their spot.
Part of the Binding Histories program, the series concludes with a public animated installation on July 26, at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Binding Histories is presented through Studio Vizcaya, an annual initiative that invites local artists to lead collaborative, site-inspired projects with the community.
Nicole Combeau is a Miami-based artist and educator whose work explores storytelling, cultural preservation and identity through photography and book arts. Sean Sullivan, also known as Sean Was Here, creates immersive 3D projection installations that blend technology and illusion to connect audiences with digital art in shared physical spaces.
