Light and color become the subject of perception in a new room-sized installation by James Turrell at Superblue Miami. On view beginning September 2, Blue Sea Sky continues the artist’s long-running exploration of the ganzfeld, an immersive field of color designed to blur spatial boundaries and alter the viewer’s sense of depth and orientation.
A leading figure of the Light and Space movement, Turrell has spent decades investigating how people perceive light, drawing in part on his studies of perceptual psychology and his experience as a pilot. In Blue Sea Sky, shifting blues, sunset tones, greens and pinks evoke the meeting of sea and sky while also reflecting colors associated with Miami’s coastal landscape and urban environment.
The installation succeeds Turrell’s AKHU, which had been on view at Superblue Miami since the center opened in 2021. Access to Blue Sea Sky requires a complimentary on-site reservation and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
