A teenage girl’s violent outburst exposes buried connections among the adults trying to understand her in Teatro Avante’s Carrusel. The production runs Thursday, September 3 through Sunday, September 6 at Westchester Cultural Arts Center, with evening performances at 8:30 p.m. September 3-5 and a 5 p.m. performance September 6. Written by Abel González Melo and directed by Jackie Briceño, the play is part of the 40th International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami.
The story follows a grandfather and legal guardian, a teacher and a doctor as they examine the disturbing behavior of a teenage girl who has attacked her classmates. Their search for answers opens a hidden past, revealing secret ties among the characters and situating their lives within a country recently returned to democracy.
The cast features Julio Rodríguez, Alina Interian, Monica Quintero and Isabella Chirinos. The production is performed in Spanish with English supertitles and has no intermission. An advisory notes that actors will use non-nicotine prop cigarettes during the performance.
