Conservation Workshop Series
Jul 13, 2025 - Aug 10, 2025
monthly on the 2nd Sunday
From: 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
Discover the vital role of South Florida’s coastal ecosystems in climate and species conservation during this summer’s Conservation Workshop Series at the Deering Estate.
On Sunday, July 13, the featured workshop, “The Blue Carbon Revolution: Mangroves as Climate Change Champions,” is led by University of Miami graduate student Ivonne Batan. Participants will explore restored and non-restored mangrove sites using hands-on methods like soil coring and transect sampling to examine carbon storage in the soil. The session highlights how mangrove restoration contributes to carbon sequestration and offers an up-close look at ongoing research taking place on site.
The series continues Sunday, August 10 with “Uncovering the Diamonds of Biscayne Bay,” an in-depth look at the mangrove diamondback terrapin. Deering Estate’s Learning and Conservation team will discuss this elusive estuarine turtle’s life history, conservation status and innovative methods being used to protect it in the wild.
Workshops take place in the Visitor Center Exhibit Room. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under and Deering Estate Foundation members. Advance registration is required via Park Link; no on-site ticket sales are available.
