Encuentros: The Cuban Experience

A documentary about dance, diaspora and belonging returns to the big screen in a new producer’s edit at Coral Gables Art Cinema. Presented Sunday, October 11 by University of Miami Libraries, the program features the final public screening of Tiffany Madera’s Havana Habibi, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

The film follows Miami-born artist Madera as she returns to Havana in search of her roots and goes on to found Grupo Aisha Al-Hanan, described as Cuba’s first belly dance troupe. Through the dancers’ experiences, Havana Habibi explores migration, identity and the body as a site of cultural memory and self-expression.

After the screening, Madera and Vanessa Garcia will take part in a 30-minute conversation with the audience. A reception follows at Books & Books, hosted by the Coral Gables Community Foundation. Admission is free.
