A provocative solo project by conceptual artist Eric Doeringer explores questions of originality, authorship and artistic value through works that blur the line between homage and critique. On view July 2–31 at the ICA Miami Expansion, the exhibition features a selection of Doeringer’s well-known “Bootleg” paintings alongside a striking new series of large-scale works.
Doeringer, based in Los Angeles, is widely known for his re-creations of iconic pieces by contemporary artists. His miniature “bootlegs”—meticulously rendered reproductions of works by figures like Richard Prince and Wade Guyton—challenge the structures of the art market and the criteria by which authenticity is defined. The exhibition offers a rare survey of this body of work, highlighting the artist’s incisive engagement with art history and market dynamics.
A newly unveiled group of large-scale paintings marks a departure in scale and subject, referencing the history of the former de la Cruz Collection and introducing a dialogue between Doeringer’s conceptual approach and the exhibition site’s legacy. These works deepen his investigation into influence, collection and the continuous rewriting of contemporary art narratives.
Doeringer’s work has been exhibited at MoMA PS1, The Whitney Museum, MassMoCA and La Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, and his artist’s books are held in collections worldwide, including The Getty Center and the National Gallery of Canada.
