Three works by choreographer and artistic director Ronald K. Brown bring together contemporary dance, spiritual themes and movement rooted in the African diaspora. The performance takes place Saturday, January 30 at The Moss Center, with music ranging from jazz and classic American song to Afrobeat and Afro-Cuban rhythms.
One Shot: Rhapsody in Black and White draws on photographs by Charles “Teenie” Harris, who documented Black life in Pittsburgh from 1936 to 1975. Brown’s choreography reflects the childhood scenes, nightlife and jazz culture captured in Harris’ images, tracing the influence of one community across generations.
The program also includes Grace, a spiritual journey centered on the passage of divine grace among humanity, and Open Door, which explores Afro-Cuban social and traditional dance through music by Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble. The latter incorporates movement associated with Orisha traditions and salsa, emphasizing celebration, culture and collective joy.
