From: Noon to 5:00 PM
Mexican artist Gabriel Rico brings natural materials and discarded industrial objects into a wall-based installation that explores balance, perception and the relationship between humans and their surroundings. Gabriel Rico: IX Mural from the series–Reducción objetiva orquestada opened August 29, 2026, at The Bass in Miami Beach and remains on view through August 31, 2028. The work’s title roughly translates to “Orchestrated Object Reduction.”
Trained as an architect, Rico is known for sculptural installations that combine found objects, organic materials and geometric structures. For this work, he draws on the logic of an algebraic equation, substituting objects for symbols and arranging them across the wall in a composition meant to be read from left to right. The contrast between mathematical order and seemingly improvised materials invites viewers to form their own associations among the objects.
Rico’s broader practice considers the connections between built and natural environments, as well as the tendency to place human experience at the center of those relationships. Through asymmetry, unexpected juxtapositions and shifts in context, the installation reflects on uncertainty, cultural systems and the meanings people assign to objects.
