A choreographer’s eye for the human body runs through Geoffrey Holder’s paintings, drawings and sculpture. On view November 12 through April 4, 2027 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, Geoffrey Holder: Black Magic is the first museum survey devoted to the visual art of a figure widely known for his work in dance, theater and film.
Guest curated by Erica Moiah James, the exhibition brings together more than 60 works, including paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures, many shown publicly for the first time. Five thematic sections—Portraits, Epistles, The Sacred and the Profane, Genre and Figure Studies—explore subjects ranging from remembered faces and biblical allegories to landscapes and still lifes. Saturated color, sweeping gestures and expressive figures connect these works to Holder’s understanding of movement.
Born in Trinidad, Holder earned Tony Awards for directing and designing costumes for the original Broadway production of The Wiz in 1975. This survey places his visual practice at the foundation of that broader creative life, examining the images and ideas that sustained his work across disciplines.
