Guided Walking Tour of Historic Opa-locka
Nov 07, 2026
Select Days - Through Jan 08, 2027
Starting: 10:30 AM
Moorish Revival architecture, aviation history and stories from the city’s first century shape a guided walk through historic Opa-locka. Organized by the Opa-Locka Preservation Association, the tour is offered November 7, December 5 and January 8, beginning at the historic Opa-locka Seaboard Air Line Railway Station.
Led by Opa-locka resident and preservationist Alex Van Mecl, the approximately 90-minute route explores the city’s origins under aviation pioneer Glenn H. Curtiss, who founded Opa-locka in 1926 and envisioned a community inspired by The Arabian Nights. Along the way, participants encounter surviving architectural landmarks and learn how the city evolved from a 1920s planned community into an important center for military aviation, industry and manufacturing.
The route follows a primarily flat course through the historic downtown and returns to the train station. Tour admission also includes access to the Opa-locka Museum of Art & History beginning 30 minutes before departure and continuing for one hour after the tour.
