Shakespeare’s question of existence is reframed through the voices and lived experiences of actors with Down syndrome in this adaptation from Peru. Hamlet runs September 24-26 at the Adrienne Arsht Center as part of the 40th International Hispanic Theatre Festival of Miami. Written by William Shakespeare, adapted and directed by Chela De Ferrari, the production is presented by Teatro Avante and the Adrienne Arsht Center.
Performed by Teatro de La Plaza, the work brings together Shakespeare’s text and the personal stories of its cast, using “To be or not to be” as a starting point for a broader reflection on identity, recognition and belonging. The actors share hopes, frustrations and questions about what it means to exist in a world where inclusion is often limited or conditional.
The production has toured Europe, Latin America and the United States, earning international recognition for its reimagining of a canonical work through a deeply personal ensemble approach. The show will be performed in Spanish with English supertitles.
