Sep 10, 2025
From: 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM
Reflect on the founding and evolution of one of Miami-Dade’s most storied communities during a special centennial edition of HistoryMiami Museum’s lecture series. History Talks: Miami’s Boom Era Communities – Coral Gables takes place Wednesday, September 10 and features an in-depth conversation hosted by Resident Historian Dr. Paul S. George.
The program highlights the origins of “The City Beautiful” as envisioned by George Merrick, alongside the overlooked contributions of early Black laborers who helped build its iconic landmarks, such as the Venetian Pool, Biltmore Hotel and DeSoto Fountain. Dr. George will be joined by longtime community member Dorothy M. Wallace, who will share personal reflections on her experience growing up in the McFarlane Homestead Subdivision and making history as one of the first African American women to earn a graduate degree from the University of Miami.
Capacity is limited, and seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. This event offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with local history through lived experience and expert insight.
