Jazz Lecture & Book Signing with Ted Panken
Jan 15, 2027
From: 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Photographs of jazz musicians and the stories behind their recordings provide the focus for a conversation with journalist Ted Panken. Taking place Friday, January 15, 2027, at The Bass in Miami Beach, the late-afternoon program explores jazz history through the work of photographer and record producer Don Schlitten. Presented by Power Access, it forms part of the South Beach Jazz Festival.
The discussion centers on Love and Understanding: The Jazz Photography of Don Schlitten (Fantagraphics, 2026), which includes a biographical essay by Panken. The collection brings together more than 100 photographs selected by Schlitten, including images of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and Ella Fitzgerald. Some appeared on album covers, while others offer less familiar views of the musicians Schlitten encountered during his career as a producer, photographer and designer.
Panken has written extensively for publications including DownBeat, JazzTimes and Jazziz. His work spans artist interviews, profiles and liner notes, and he received the Jazz Journalists Association’s Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Journalism award in 2016.
A book signing follows the conversation. Admission is free with an RSVP.
