José López & Guest Viera Borisova: Schubert & Shostakov
Jan 17, 2027
From: 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM
Schubert’s lyrical chamber writing and Shostakovich’s stark late style meet in a viola-and-piano recital at The Wertheim. The concert takes place Sunday, January 17 at the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center as part of the FIU Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts 2026-2027 season. FIU Piano Professor José López is joined by guest violist Viera Borisova for a program marking Schubert’s birthday.
The recital features Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, a work originally written for a short-lived 19th-century instrument and now widely performed in arrangements for viola, cello and other solo instruments with piano. The program also includes Shostakovich’s Sonata, Op. 147, the composer’s final work and a late statement for viola and piano.
Borisova, a Moscow Conservatory-trained violist and international prizewinner, has performed across Europe, Latin America and the United States. Presented by the FIU Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts, the concert moves from Schubert’s melodic warmth to Shostakovich’s more introspective and dramatic sound world.
