May 01, 2025
From: 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM
An evening of presentations and discussion will explore the architectural legacy of La Giralda and its lasting influence on building styles in Cuba and South Florida.
La Giralda: Transformation and Influence will take place on Thursday, May 1, at the Coral Gables Museum. Presented in conjunction with the museum’s exhibition La Giralda: Transformation, Influence, Restoration (also referred to as Restoration of the Giralda), the program will begin with a welcoming reception, followed by a series of expert-led presentations.
The evening will open with an introduction to the exhibition by Ricardo Lopez, leading into a historical overview by Alejandro García Hermida, Director of the Traditional Building Cultures Foundation and Professor in Practice at the Polytechnic University of Madrid School of Architecture. Architect Jorge Trelles will discuss the presence of the Giralda in Colonial and Republican-era Cuba, and architect Frank Martinez will examine its influence on Mediterranean Revival architecture in South Florida. A roundtable panel discussion and public Q&A will follow the presentations, with a guided tour of the exhibition concluding the program.
