Hidden stories and cultural legacies come alive through an intimate exploration of Miami's historically redlined neighborhoods. Legacy Unveiled: Journey Through Miami's Hidden History, taking place Saturday, March 15, offers a look into the communities that shaped South Florida's diverse landscape.
This immersive tour, presented by South Florida People of Color, guides participants through significant landmarks including the Black Police Precinct Museum, Greater Bethel AME Church and the Hampton House, where civil rights leaders once gathered. Visitors will discover the rich heritage of Overtown, known historically as the Harlem of the South, and examine enduring symbols of the past like the Race Wall in Liberty City.
Expert narrators share stories of community resilience while leading participants through these historic sites. The experience includes stops at sacred spaces like the Lincoln Memorial Gardens Cemetery, offering insights into the neighborhood's evolution and cultural significance.
The tour departs from the C. Lawton McCall Community Center in Miami Shores. Participants will enjoy comfortable air-conditioned transportation, a catered lunch at the Historic Hampton House, and engaging group discussions. Miami Shores residents can join for $25, while non-resident tickets are $65.
This educational journey illuminates how historical policies continue to influence present-day communities, while celebrating the cultural vibrancy that emerged despite systematic challenges. The program is made possible through the Miami Shores Community Alliance.
