Live on the Plaza: Yissy García Trio

Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, hip-hop and electronic influences converge in a trio performance led by Cuban drummer and composer Yissy García at the Adrienne Arsht Center. The Yissy García Trio makes its Live on the Plaza debut on Saturday, October 24, with a set combining original music, Cuban son and contemporary jazz.

Born in Havana’s Cayo Hueso neighborhood, García grew up in a musical family led by her father, drummer Bernardo García, a founding member of the influential Cuban group Irakere. After classical percussion training in Havana, she developed a style that moves freely among Afro-Cuban music, jazz, funk, R&B and electronic sounds. She later founded Bandancha, the ensemble through which she has become known for an experimental approach sometimes described as “high-speed Cuban jazz.”

The performance takes place outdoors on the Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza for the Arts. Doors open 90 minutes before the concert, with light bites, beverages and happy hour pricing available.
