A forbidden romance, a forged betrayal and a forced marriage drive Donizetti’s bel canto tragedy toward one of opera’s most psychologically intense scenes. Florida Grand Opera opens its 2026-2027 season with performances Saturday, November 14, Sunday, November 15 and Tuesday, November 17 at the Adrienne Arsht Center. Set amid a bitter family feud, Lucia di Lammermoor pairs demanding vocal writing with a story of political ambition, manipulation and emotional collapse.
Lucia has secretly pledged herself to Edgardo, the sworn enemy of her family, but her brother Enrico is determined to arrange a marriage that will restore the family’s fortunes. After convincing Lucia that Edgardo has betrayed her, Enrico forces her to sign a marriage contract with another man. Edgardo returns too late, and the resulting confrontation pushes Lucia toward the breakdown depicted in the opera’s celebrated “Mad Scene.”
Composed by Gaetano Donizetti with a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, the opera will be sung in Italian with projected English and Spanish translations.
