Exploring the legacy of Cuban academic dialogue.
Join distinguished scholars and experts for Miradas Desde El Presente (Perspectives From The Present), an illuminating panel discussion on Thursday, March 20, at the Roberto C. Goizueta Pavilion in the Otto G. Richter Library at the University of Miami.
This scholarly gathering brings together prominent voices in Cuban studies to examine the impact of The Institute of Cuban Studies (IEC). Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1969 by María Cristina Herrera and fellow Cuban academics in exile, the IEC fostered critical academic dialogue on Cuban issues for over three decades and significantly advanced Cuban studies throughout American and global academic circles.
The panel features an impressive lineup of experts:
- Emilio Cueto, Lawyer, Collector and Author
- María de los Ángeles Torres, Distinguished Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies, University of Illinois at Chicago
- Javier Figueroa, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus
- Lisandro Pérez, Professor of Latin American and Latino Studies, John Jay College, City University of New York
The discussion will be moderated by Michael J. Bustamante, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History and Emilio Bacardí Moreau Chair in Cuban and Cuban-American Studies at the University of Miami.
Hosted at the Cuban Heritage Collection, which houses the IEC's administrative archives, this event offers an opportunity to understand the organization's lasting contributions to contemporary Cuban studies. The panel will be presented in Spanish and will conclude with an audience Q&A session.
This free event is presented by the University of Miami Libraries.
