Private desires and overlooked details reveal the constraints placed on women in a double bill of early 20th-century plays. FIU Theatre presents Overtones and Trifles on select dates November 13–22 in the Black Box Theater at the Herbert & Nicole Wertheim Performing Arts Center.
Alice Gerstenberg’s Overtones, directed by Rebecca Covey, examines the distance between carefully maintained appearances and complicated inner lives. Humor and hidden desires expose the cost of concealing one’s true feelings to meet social expectations.
In Susan Glaspell’s Trifles, directed by Marina Pareja, a murder investigation unfolds inside an isolated farmhouse. Two women recognize clues in domestic objects dismissed by the male investigators, leaving them to decide what to disclose and whom to protect.
Performances take place November 13–15 and November 18–22, with evening shows Wednesday through Saturday and Sunday matinees.
