Patti Austin & The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra
Jan 30, 2026
Starting: 7:30 PM
A reflective concert program brings together a celebrated vocalist and a full orchestra to revisit the work of a composer whose influence bridged jazz, film and the concert stage. Vocalist Patti Austin appears with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and Big Band for an evening dedicated to the music of Patrick Williams, emphasizing the depth, rhythmic sophistication and emotional clarity that defined his writing.
Williams’ career spanned decades and genres, earning him 16 GRAMMY nominations and a Pulitzer Prize nomination for An American Concerto. His compositions and arrangements were performed by artists including Frank Sinatra, Eddie Daniels and Tom Scott, and his long creative relationship with Austin produced some of his most personal and enduring work. Austin, whose career moves fluidly between jazz, R&B, pop and the Great American Songbook, brings first-hand insight to the program through music shaped by shared history and collaboration.
The concert unfolds in two parts, beginning with orchestral works that highlight Williams’ expansive compositional voice, followed by a big band set featuring Austin as soloist. Selections include music associated with her For Ella album and other projects that showcase Williams’ distinctive arrangements and Austin’s interpretive range.
Patti Austin & The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra: The Music of Patrick Williams takes place Friday, January 30 at UM Gusman Concert Hall. The performance is part of the Frost School of Music’s Signature Events lineup for the 2025-2026 season, which spotlights artist-driven programs and cross-genre collaboration.
