Pedro Pan: An Evening with Mario García
Dec 06, 2026
Starting: 5:00 PM
A childhood journey from Cuba to the United States becomes the starting point for a memoir about exile, adaptation and belonging during an author event at Books & Books in Coral Gables. Taking place Sunday, December 6, Mario García discusses Pedro Pan: Learning to Dance – The Long Road to Becoming American, which recounts his arrival in the United States at age 14 as part of Operation Pedro Pan. The program brought more than 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban minors to the United States between 1960 and 1962.
Through personal stories spanning his adolescence and later life, García reflects on family separation, identity, resilience and the gradual process of building a home in a new country. His career went on to include work as a journalist, educator, author and media consultant, with projects for news organizations around the world.
The event is free and open to the public, with RSVP requested. Seating is not guaranteed, and copies of Pedro Pan will be available for purchase at the event.
