Rachmaninoff 2
Feb 13, 2027
Starting: 8:00 PM
Rachmaninoff’s sweeping Second Symphony and Walton’s Cello Concerto frame an orchestral evening led by conductor Leonard Slatkin at New World Center. The concert takes place Saturday, February 13 as part of New World Symphony’s 2026-2027 season. British cellist Steven Isserlis joins the orchestra for Walton’s concerto, while NWS Conducting Fellow Ziwei Ma leads Anna Clyne’s Masquerade to open the program.
Walton’s Cello Concerto offers a lyrical, introspective showcase for solo cello, moving between restrained elegance and more impassioned writing. After intermission, Slatkin conducts Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, a richly Romantic work known for its broad melodies, expansive orchestral writing and lively final movement.
The program also highlights multiple generations of musical leadership. Slatkin is a six-time Grammy Award-winning conductor and Music Director of the Nashville Symphony beginning with the 2026-27 season, while Isserlis is an internationally recognized soloist, chamber musician, author and educator. Ma, New World Symphony’s Conducting Fellow, has been named a 2026-28 recipient of the Taki Alsop Conducting Fel
