Cuban artist Ronkalunga brings a contemporary take on son, trova and bolero to The Fillmore Miami Beach, blending traditional roots with pop, funk, alternative rock and electronic production. The concert takes place Friday, August 21, highlighting a songwriter whose music has gained growing attention in Miami and beyond.
Born Ronaldo Rodríguez Hernández in Baracoa, Cuba, Ronkalunga is known for lyrics that use humor, double meaning and Cuban sayings while drawing from the legacy of artists such as Miguel Matamoros, Ñico Saquito, Benny Moré and Faustino Oramas “El Guayabero.” His sound connects older Cuban forms with a 21st-century sensibility, pairing rhythmic familiarity with arrangements designed to reach broader audiences.
Songs such as “El Carnicero,” “Coco y Guayaba,” “Lo Mismo Me Dá” and “Refranero” reflect his mix of wit, danceable grooves and musical tradition. Ronkalunga has also drawn attention for his collaboration with producer Emilio Estefan, who is producing an album for him at Crescent Moon Studios.
