Jun 08, 2025
From: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Discover the story behind a groundbreaking coral rescue mission through a documentary that blends environmental urgency with scientific innovation.
On Sunday, June 8, the Deering Estate will host a screening of Noah’s Ark: A Coral Rescue First in its indoor Visitor Center theater. Timed to coincide with World Ocean Day, the program features a documentary directed by Michael Zimmer that chronicles a 2019 mission to save diseased coral in Dry Tortugas National Park—an unprecedented effort to preserve fragile reef ecosystems in the face of rising ocean temperatures and accelerating coral disease.
Set 70 miles west of Key West, the film follows a team of scientists as they remove vulnerable corals from the wild to preserve them in safer environments. Through compelling interviews and vivid underwater cinematography, Noah’s Ark provides rare insight into marine conservation work and the challenges of protecting biodiversity in a rapidly changing climate.
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A with experts in the field, including Dr. Katey Lesneski of Mission: Iconic Reefs, Ken Nedimyer of Reef Renewal USA and Kylie Smith, co-founder of I.CARE. The event offers a chance to hear firsthand perspectives on reef restoration and ongoing efforts to safeguard coral for future generations.
