Serenatas y Danzas: Frost Symphonic Winds

Wind band music shaped by dance, place and rhythmic character anchors an afternoon program by the Frost Symphonic Winds at Gusman Concert Hall. The ensemble performs Sunday, November 15 under the direction of Craig McKenzie in its third concert of the Frost School of Music’s 2026-2027 season. The program travels across musical traditions with works including George Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, Denis Llinás’ La Chancla and Derek Bourgeois’ Serenade for Winds.

Gershwin’s Cuban Overture, inspired by a 1932 visit to Havana, incorporates Afro-Cuban percussion and rhythmic elements into the composer’s orchestral language. The program places that work alongside contemporary and British wind repertoire, highlighting the range of color and character available within the concert band tradition.
