An unexpected bond between a reclusive novelist and a young researcher uncovers a long-buried story of exile, love and memory. Experience the emotional resonance of Sotto Voce at GableStage this January.
Sotto Voce, written and directed by Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz (Anna in the Tropics), runs January 23 through February 15, 2026, at GableStage at the Biltmore. The play follows a Jewish-Cuban researcher drawn to the story of the S.S. St. Louis, the 1939 ocean liner carrying Jewish refugees turned away by both Cuba and the United States. His search leads him to a German-born writer still haunted by a love affair with a passenger aboard the ill-fated ship. As the two forge an unlikely emotional connection, the play weaves memory and longing into a story that transcends generations and borders.
This will be the first full English-language production of Sotto Voce in Miami. Part of GableStage’s 27th season, it reflects the company’s ongoing dedication to intimate, character-driven storytelling that explores nuanced personal and historical narratives. Single tickets go on sale August 26.
