Soul & Gospel Revue: Frost Studio Jazz Band

Gospel, soul and spiritual traditions come together in a Black History Month program led by the Frost Studio Jazz Band at Gusman Concert Hall. The concert takes place Thursday, February 4 as part of the Frost School of Music’s 2026-2027 season, with trumpeter and composer Etienne Charles directing. Repertoire includes music associated with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Richard Smallwood and other artists whose work reflects the intersections of sacred and secular Black musical traditions.
The program traces connections among gospel, soul and traditional spirituals while placing them within the sound of a contemporary jazz ensemble. Through new arrangements and ensemble performance, the concert highlights how these traditions have shaped American popular music, jazz and communal expression.
