Experience a performance where layered harmonies and South African vocal traditions come together in a globally inspired repertoire.The Soweto Gospel Choir presents their concert PEACE on Saturday, September 20 at The Moss Center. The performance includes South African freedom songs and spirituals, alongside reinterpretations of well-known works by Aretha Franklin, Peter Gabriel, Leonard Cohen, and others.
Formed in 2002, the group has received multiple Grammy and Emmy Awards for their contributions to world and gospel music. Their sound draws on a range of South African vocal traditions, combining expressive vocal techniques with coordinated movement and colorful attire.
The choir has performed at major international events and for figures such as Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Barack Obama. They have also collaborated with artists including U2, Stevie Wonder and Robert Plant. According to the San Francisco Classical Voice, their performances are “undeniably synchronized, appearing unshakable, and simultaneously expressing universality and individuality.”
