Steve Reich at 90
Mar 14, 2027
Starting: 2:00 PM
Music, visual art and film intersect in a chamber program marking Steve Reich’s 90th year at New World Center in Miami Beach. The concert takes place Sunday, March 14 as part of New World Symphony’s 2026-2027 season. Led by conductor Brad Lubman, Fellows of the New World Symphony perform a program that moves from Reich’s multimedia collaboration Reich/Richter to Webern’s compressed modernism and Brahms’ richly textured string writing.
The afternoon opens with Reich/Richter, a 2019 work that pairs Reich’s precise, pulsing musical language with visual material connected to artist Gerhard Richter. After intermission, Anton Webern’s Symphony, Op. 21 offers a concise study in structure and restraint before the program concludes with Brahms’ String Quintet No. 1, a work that builds from lyrical warmth to an energetic final movement.
Lubman is known for his work with contemporary music and has conducted ensembles including Steve Reich and Musicians, Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group. He is also founding Co-Artistic and Music Director of Ensemble Signal, whose recording of Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians received a Diapason d’Or.
