The Bass Dialogues | Featuring Amalia Pica

Artist Amalia Pica examines participation, language and shared authorship through an installation that transforms The Bass’s historic Rotunda into an interactive library. Presented Friday, December 4, during Miami Art Week, The Bass Dialogues conversation brings Pica together with Assistant Curator Jasa McKenzie to discuss Lecturas Posibles and the ideas behind its evolving, visitor-generated environment.

Inspired in part by the museum building’s history as the Miami Beach Public Library and Art Center, Lecturas Posibles reimagines the Rotunda as an almost two-dimensional reading room. Furniture, bookshelves and everyday objects are covered in chalkboard paint and outlined in white, while visitors are invited to write and draw across the surfaces with colored chalk. As marks accumulate, overlap and are erased, the installation becomes a changing record of collective expression.

Born in Argentina and based in London, Pica works across sculpture, installation, performance and photography, frequently exploring communication, collaboration and the ways people construct meaning together. Her work has been presented at institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, Modern Art Oxford and the Guggenheim Museum.
