Steely Dan’s jazz-inflected rock catalog becomes a springboard for improvisation and original material in a performance by The Expanding Man at the Seminole Theatre. Appearing Saturday, April 3, the group pairs interpretations of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen’s songs with its own compositions influenced by the band’s intricate harmonies, grooves and lyrical style.
The lineup features vocalist Steve Memmolo, a finalist on NBC’s The Voice, guitarist Jon Zeeman and keyboardist Peter Primamore, an award-winning television composer. Rather than recreating Steely Dan recordings note for note, the ensemble uses the repertoire as a framework for extended jams and new arrangements, blending tribute performance with a more exploratory live approach.
