Jewish folklore and Cuban revolutionary history converge in a musical returning to the Colony Theatre for Miami New Drama’s 10th anniversary season. The Golem of Havana runs on select dates beginning Thursday, January 28, with performances scheduled into early March at the Miami Beach venue. Written by Michel Hausmann, the production marks the return of the first show Miami New Drama staged at the Colony Theatre.
Set in late-1950s Havana, the musical follows Rebecca, a young Jewish girl whose family includes Holocaust survivors navigating poverty, political unrest and the final days of the Batista regime. As an Afro-Cuban housekeeper prays to the sea and a wounded revolutionary hides nearby, Rebecca turns to the Golem, a mythical protector from Jewish folklore, as a figure of hope and rescue.
The production blends Jewish legend with Cuban history through a score that moves among klezmer, mambo and bolero. Presented as part of Miami New Drama’s 2026-2027 season, the anniversary production revisits a work that reflects the company’s ongoing focus on Miami’s layered cultural histories, migration stories and multilingual communities.
