"The Nickel Boys" Reading Group
Dec 08, 2024
Starting: 3:30 PM
Join Books & Books on Sunday, December 8, at 3:30 p.m. for a reading group dedicated to Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Nickel Boys, in anticipation of its upcoming film adaptation. This thought-provoking story follows Elwood Curtis, a young Black boy in 1960s Tallahassee, whose life is changed after he is unjustly sent to the Nickel Academy, a brutal reform school. As Elwood navigates the harsh realities of the institution, he builds a complex friendship with fellow student Turner, whose cynical outlook challenges Elwood’s ideals, ultimately leading to life-altering choices. Based on the true story of a reform school with a dark legacy, The Nickel Boys explores themes of resilience and justice in a powerful narrative.
This reading group provides a chance to dive into the novel’s themes just before the film, directed by RaMell Ross and featuring stars like Daveed Diggs and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, releases in theaters on December 13. Attendance is free with RSVP, and guests will enjoy $5 specials on house beer and wine and a 15% discount on one book of choice. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.
