Celebrate Juneteenth with an immersive celebration at Barry University.
This Juneteenth, delve into the history and legacy of liberation alongside a series of cultural activations at Barry University's Uhuru: Liberation through Education and Cultural Creativity event. Held on Wednesday, June 19 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., this collaborative event between Barry University and South Florida People of Color offers a unique opportunity for educational enrichment and cultural immersion.
The program begins with a historical exploration led by Dr. Tameka Hobbs. Dr. Hobbs will shed light on the narrative of Juneteenth, examining its connection to the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil War, Florida's Emancipation Day, July 4th and the 13th Amendment. This session aims to spark critical thinking and foster a deeper understanding of this pivotal moment in American history.
Following the historical exploration, attendees can participate in interactive arts activities, eat soul food and check out live performances. The lineup features a steel drum band, a dance performance and the poetry of Haitian-American artist and cultural ambassador Mecca aka Grimo.
