Independent films, filmmaker conversations and industry-focused programs fill Historic Overtown and Downtown Miami during a free three-day festival devoted to emerging voices and culturally driven storytelling. The 11th annual Urban Film Festival runs Friday, September 4 through Sunday, September 6, presenting nearly 200 films by local, national and international filmmakers alongside workshops, Q&As and professional development programs.
Opening-day programming at the Overtown Performing Arts Center spotlights films created by students in Florida Film House International’s 1st Take Youth Film Program, followed by the festival’s Welcome to Miami Party at Red Rooster Overtown. On Saturday and Sunday, screenings move to Silverspot Cinema in Downtown Miami, accompanied by master discussions covering writing, acting, directing, cinematography, producing, distribution and emerging approaches to storytelling.
Presented by Florida Film House International, the annual festival combines public screenings with education and access to film-industry professionals. The 2026 edition also expands its focus on distribution and monetization through a collaboration with VURT, including conversations about how independent filmmakers can move projects beyond the festival circuit and reach wider audiences. Admission to screenings and educational programming is free, with advance registration encouraged for programs with limited seating.
