See ambitious and experimental art installations that activate MOCA's Paradise Courtyard at the museum's new public commissioning program, Welcome to Paradise. For its inaugural season, Welcome to Paradise kicks off with Victory Garden, an interactive sculptural community garden by Miami-based artist Emmett Moore. Drawing inspiration from victory gardens that were planted during wartime to supplement rations and boost morale, Moore’s Victory Garden connects the local community with contemporary art and encourages visitors to reflect on their relationship with the built environment.
The site-specific installation activates MOCA’s Paradise Courtyard using repurposed steel drums as material for large-scale sculptures. Visitors can sit, relax and recharge in solar-powered spaces within the sculptures, all of which are planted with a variety of hardy, low-maintenance edible plants such and grasses native to South Florida and the Caribbean. Through workshops and virtual guided planting resources, Victory Garden aims to empower visitors to start their own gardens, and features community organizations including Ready-To-Grow Gardens, Finca Morada and Urban Greenworks, that provide spaces for learning and creating dialogue. At the installation's harvest stage, there will be a range of edible plants from cilantro to starfruit as well as plants that are pollinator-friendly.
Welcome to Paradise features temporary public art projects by local South Florida artists. The inaugural edition of Welcome to Paradise will showcase artists with works that explore the intersection of ecology and technology. The exhibit made possible with major support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Additional support was provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
