Violin & Piano Virtuosity: Deering Quartet

Virtuosic writing for violin and piano meets the intimacy of chamber music in a program featuring Frost faculty members Charles Castleman and Naoko Takao with the Deering Quartet. The concert takes place Tuesday, November 17 at Newman Recital Hall as part of the Frost School of Music’s 2026-2027 season. Chausson’s expansive Concert for Violin, Piano and String Quartet, Op. 21 anchors the program alongside Schubert’s Rondo in B minor, D. 895.

Composed between 1889 and 1891, Chausson’s unusually scored work places solo violin and piano against a string quartet, moving between concerto-like virtuosity and close chamber interplay. It was dedicated to Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, who performed in its 1892 premiere. Schubert’s Rondo, written for the celebrated Bohemian violinist Josef Slavík, similarly gives both violinist and pianist demanding solo roles.

Castleman and Takao are joined by Deering Quartet members Madison Ryan and Eliot Roske, violins, Alexandra D’Amico, viola and Anthony de Peña, cello.
