We're Magic, We're Real (These Walls) Performance

On Saturday, September 21, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) presents We’re Magic. We’re Real # 3 (These Walls), a durational performance by Danish-Trinidadian artist Jeannette Ehlers. Part of the Caribbean Cultural Institute’s (CCI) Beyond Representation series, this performance explores the significance of hair as a cultural and identity marker within the African diaspora.

Connected to PAMM's third-floor terrace by long cornrows, the performers move deliberately in sync with the hanging gardens, creating a poetic interplay between culture, nature, body and landscape. The piece evokes themes of grief, strength and the ongoing impact of history, set against the evocative sound of the Atlantic Ocean. Originally commissioned by Mads Norgaard and first performed in 2021, this meditative work invites viewers to reflect on the connection between past and present, as well as the enduring human desire for freedom and sanctuary.
