Explore Haunted Miami on Your Own
Some of Miami’s haunted sites are hiding in plain sight. The luxurious Biltmore Miami – Coral Gables hotel in historic Coral Gables is notoriously haunted. The Dade Heritage Trust offers regular walking tours of The Biltmore, although they aren’t exclusively focused on the hotel’s history as a World War II hospital.
Among the most famous of the Biltmore's ghosts is mobster Thomas “Fatty” Walsh, who was murdered on the hotel’s 13th floor during a gambling dispute in 1929. Many guests have reported seeing a portly man in period clothing roaming the 13th floor, particularly around the suite where he was murdered. Some claim to hear disembodied voices and the sounds of laughter, reminiscent of the wild parties Walsh once hosted. Echoes of the Biltmore’s time as a military hospital linger in the form of ghostly soldiers. Apparitions of men in World War II uniforms have been sighted in various parts of the hotel, particularly in the area that once housed the hospital wards. Some guests have reported hearing the sounds of marching boots and distant gunfire.
Explore the paranormal activity said to occur at The Historic Alfred I. Dupont Building in Downtown Miami. One of its most-prominent ghosts is former politician Grant Stockdale, who fell to his death from the building’s 13th floor. On that same floor, people have reportedly seen Stockdale’s specter. Paranormal investigators have flocked to the scene on numerous occasions, trying to capture or record the phantom.
