Young, Gifted and Black: The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection

Works by nearly 50 contemporary artists trace evolving approaches to Black identity, representation and artmaking in an exhibition drawn from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection. Young, Gifted and Black is on view October 23 through April 24 at the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, bringing together 52 works by artists spanning multiple generations.

Curated by Antwaun Sargent and Matt Wycoff, the exhibition pairs established figures including David Hammons, Glenn Ligon, Lorna Simpson, Henry Taylor, Kara Walker and Nari Ward with a younger generation represented by Jordan Casteel, Jonathan Lyndon Chase, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Paul Mpagi Sepuya and Vaughn Spann. Together, the works examine questions of identity, visibility, cultural memory and art history while showing how younger artists engage with and extend the practices of their predecessors.

The exhibition also reflects the breadth of the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection through an unusually varied range of materials. Painting, photography and mixed-media works incorporate everything from oil and acrylic to embroidery floss, basketball cards, velvet, glitter, coffee and feathers.
