Yuko Mohri: Unviolated Imperfection

Decaying fruit, circulating water and ocean waves become sources of sound, light and movement in Yuko Mohri’s kinetic installations at The Bass in Miami Beach. On view September 17, 2026 through May 30, 2027, Unviolated Imperfection is the Tokyo-based artist’s first solo exhibition at a U.S. museum. Spanning three galleries, the exhibition examines how nature, technology, chance and physical forces connect people, objects and their environments.

In Decomposition, electrodes monitor subtle changes in locally grown fruit as it decays, translating shifts in moisture into evolving electronic tones and pulses of light. The resulting composition changes continuously, bringing together references to still-life painting, Buddhist representations of impermanence and experimental electronic music.

A new version of Moré Moré (Leaky), previously presented at the 2024 Venice Biennale, sends water through a network of pumps and secondhand objects sourced in Miami. Inspired by improvised responses to leaks in Tokyo subway stations, the work turns an inefficient repair system into a chain reaction of sound and motion.

In Piano Solo, recordings of waves along Miami Beach are translated into notes played by a self-operating grand piano. Influenced by composers John Cage and David Tudor, Mohri treats gravity, time, improvisation and environmental change as artistic materials, creating installations that remain responsive rather than fixed.
