Miami-Dade Reef Guard Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, enhancing, and promoting the marine environment and coral reefs along the coast of Greater Miami and Miami Beach.
The organization was established in 2009 in response to the Florida Coral Reef Protection Act and the need to protect local reefs from damage caused by vessel groundings and anchors. With support from local dive shops, public donations, Miami-Dade County, and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Reef Guard helped establish a mooring buoy program along Miami-Dade's coral reefs. An initial 42 buoys were installed by 2012, and following an expansion completed in 2023, the program now includes 54 mooring buoys. Since 2018, the program has been fully funded by Miami-Dade County.
Beyond the mooring buoy program, Reef Guard supports natural reef conservation and the development and promotion of artificial reefs, which provide important habitat for marine life while helping reduce pressure on natural coral reefs. The organization has also supported underwater 3D mapping of local artificial reef sites, providing divers with a unique way to discover Miami's underwater environment.
Visitors and residents can get involved through volunteering, membership, and donations while learning more about the reefs, artificial wrecks, and marine ecosystems that make Greater Miami a distinctive destination for scuba diving, fishing, and ocean recreation.
