Alice C. Wainwright Park is a rare protected upland plant community. Natural Forest Communities (NFC) occur only in South Florida and along the coastlines and provide important ecosystems for local wildlife. Alice C. Wainwright Park is a closed canopy forest consisting primarily of evergreen and semi-deciduous trees and shrubs known as Tropical Hardwood Hammock.
The park, named for the first elected female to serve on the City of Miami Commission, is located on the Biscayne Bay waterfront, offering beautiful views and breezes. The dog-friendly park is an excellent place to ride bikes or to just relax and read a book.
Park Activities and Amenities
Alice C. Wainwright Park reflects the laid-back vibe of the surrounding Coconut Grove neighborhood. The park's natural features make it one of Greater Miami & Miami Beach’s most unique coastal parks. From the lower elevation area, visitors can view an exposed limestone outcrop of the Miami Rock Ridge. To the northeast, in the wilderness area of the park, sits one of the remnants of Brickell Hammock – an expanse of tropical hardwood hammock that once stretched from the Miami River to north Coconut Grove. At this time, there is no public access to the hammock wilderness area of the park.
Get some exercise at the park’s basketball court, resistance based outdoor gym and large playground – all with views of the bay. Picnickers can choose from many picnic shelters or the spacious lawn area. There is also a BBQ area and three large pavilion shelters for parties of 20 people or less. Picnic shelters and pavilions are available on a first come, first serve basis. Everyone will appreciate the waterfront views. Restrooms are available at the park. This park on the bay, with a view of the city skyline, is a small open green area popular with bikers, runners and picnickers for the free parking, amazing view, and laid-back atmosphere. This neighborhood park isn’t as bustling with activity as some of the bigger ones, but it still has amenities aplenty: two basketball courts (with an ocean view) and a small outdoor gym.
