Art of Black Miami Podcast with Brandon Clarke

A second-generation artist, Brandon Clarke lives and works in Miami, Florida and creates work that investigates the intersections of identity, memory, and historical narrative. His work exposes many hidden messages of self-worth and identity and ultimately invites viewers to look beyond the surface and confront the hidden layers of history and self to encounter the question “Who are we really within the framework of our lives?” 

With a signature technique of working on the reverse side of the canvas, Clarke draws from his background in architecture to use structure, form, and color as frameworks to build meaning. Employing materials such as handwritten letters, acrylic, and spray paint, he reimagines and illuminates the complex experiences of Black Americans and in doing so, exposes overlooked dimensions of American history. Symbolic materials like roofing tar, living moss, and three-dimensional text embody ideas of protection, resilience, and erasure, adding both metaphorical and tactile depth.
