Miami’s outdoor experts can take you on a journey through the destination’s great outdoors. During a Miami EcoAdventure, you can snorkel with fish, bike through tropical hardwood hammock or take a nighttime owl walk. Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces leads tours like these and more through its Miami EcoAdventures program. Designed for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages, these year-round, family-friendly activities take place from the Everglades all the way to the Broward County line and give participants a chance to see a different side of Miami.

All tours are led by park naturalists from Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces. Each activity highlights conservation and the destination’s unique environment. Read on for information about some of the EcoAdventures you can enjoy.

Water Adventures

Miami EcoAdventures offers a range of water adventures for the whole family. Some of the most popular activities include kayaking through Crandon Park at sunrise, sailing through Biscayne Bay under the full moon in a 45-foot Parks Explorer catamaran and touring the crystal-clear waters of Key Biscayne and mangrove forest of Bear Cut Preserve in a see-through kayak. There are nine guided kayaking tours in total, as well as snorkeling excursions along one of the world’s only fossilized reefs and fishing activities where visitors can see colorful sea life.

The Oleta River Canoe Tour is particularly special. It takes guests out of the hustle and bustle of Miami and into Oleta River State Park. This state park is an oasis of natural wildlife and the 4.7 mile tour takes guests through the natural ecosystems of wading birds, osprey, fish and, if you’re lucky, the West Indian Manatee.

If you love that, try seeing The City Beautiful from a canoe. The guided Coral Gables Waterway Canoe Adventure runs 3.5 miles and lets guests paddle through the man-made waterway's beautiful scenery, wildlife and historic landmarks.

All of these activities and more can be reserved on a first come, first served basis. With the exception of fishing, all necessary equipment is provided. Check with Miami EcoAdventures for information about fees, hours and rental opportunities.

Land Adventures

Miami, which has five nature centers with over 12 miles of nature trails, is an excellent place for adventure on land. The program hosts archery lessons, guided hiking tours through tropical forests, nighttime animal encounters, “haunted” investigations through the woods, Everglades adventures and campfires with roasted marshmallows and tales of the area’s Native American history.

If you’re up for the challenge, follow a naturalist guide through the Redlands on the 12-mile Historic Redlands Bike Tour. Guests depart from Castellow Hammock Park and explore the Silver Palm Historic District, Hattie Bauer Preserve and Fruit and Spice Park. Participants must bring their own bikes and helmets to join the ride. This tour can be reserved on a first come, first served basis. Check here for information about fees, hours and rental opportunities.

Miami EcoAdventures has also partnered with Zoo Miami for one particularly exciting offering. This land and water activity is a three-hour, naturalist-led tour. Participants kayak along Zoo Miami’s hidden freshwater lake and discover its WWII-era military relicts and oolitic limestone cliffs. The tour then hikes through the zoo’s Pine Rockland where you’ll learn about the important ecosystem.

All of these activities and more can be reserved on a first come, first served basis. All necessary equipment is provided. Check with Miami EcoAdventures for information about fees, hours and rental opportunities.
