Alternative R&B, atmospheric hip-hop and Peruvian cumbia converge in the evolving sound of singer, songwriter and producer A.CHAL at ZeyZey in Little Haiti. The Peruvian-born artist performs Sunday, September 27, bringing a catalog shaped by his upbringing between Peru, Queens and Massachusetts alongside newer music that reconnects more directly with his cultural roots.
Born Alejandro Salazar, A.CHAL first developed a bilingual sound spanning R&B, trap, psychedelic textures and experimental pop. More recently, he has turned toward the cumbia, chicha and popular music he encountered while spending extended time in Peru, incorporating those influences into new recordings and a live-band approach that blends cumbia with rock. His recent work includes collaborations with Peruvian cumbia figures Los Mirlos and songs such as “Cholo Gang,” which he has described as a turning point in defining this new musical direction.
